Hexagra Sequence
Hexagram Note:
Biting Through: Reflects confrontation, conflict, and decisive action. It advises facing challenges head-on, overcoming obstacles with determination, and persevering through adversity.
Hexagram 21 – Shì Kè (Biting Through / Taming the Power of the Small)
Fire over Thunder — Lí above Zhèn
Judgment
Shì Kè: Success.
Favorable to administer justice.
Commentary on the Judgment (Tuàn)
Shì Kè means “biting through”: there is something within the mouth (or jaw) that must be addressed.
Success comes from separating the firm and yielding, acting with clarity;
thunder and lightning combine to produce illumination.
The yielding attains the center and moves upward;
even if not in its proper position, it is favorable to handle legal matters.
Commentary on the Image (Xiàng)
“Thunder and lightning biting through”—this is Biting Through.
The ancient kings used this to clarify punishments and enforce the law.
